Reports are saying Rizzo will finally be promoted to the big leagues this Wednesday. It’s been well publicised that Brad Hawpe has been fielding balls in Right Field and tonight he’s pencilled in as the Padres starting RF. The Padres have likely kept Rizzo stashed away long enough to avoid Super 2 eligibility so it’s safe to say that barring an injury he’ll be with the big club by the end of the week.

If he’s still available in your fantasy league you should grab him now! Especially in NL-Only formats.

for sports news then you probably should wake up and start getting your news elsewhere. ESPN has turned into the tmz of the sports world. ESPN is kind of like MTV. Once upon a time ESPN was a great sports network. However over time they’ve began transforming into a network that specializes in starting and spreading rumors.

My advice?
If you want quality MLB coverage….watch MLB network. If you don’t get MLB network then switch to a package or service that will give it to you. If you’re a true baseball fan then you won’t regret making the switch and getting to watch something other that the crap that spews out of people like Buster Olney’s mouth.

Quality NFL & NBA? Get NFL network or NBAtv.

Quality College Sports coverage? Well, TV wise you’ve go to stick with ESPN unless you happen to be a fan of a team that has their own tv network. With the exception of having to listen to the senile loudmouth Vitale I don’t have that big of an issue with the “mothership’s” coverage of college hoops.

Sports Radio?
First and foremost I’d say check you’re local AM sports stations. Otherwise check out ESPN defector Dan Patrick’s show. I’ve become a huge fan of the DP show and watch it anytime I get a chance.

ESPN used to be a great sports network. Now its nothing but a rumor mill. If you live outside the northeast or in a smaller market then you’ve probably switched to other sources for news. But in case you haven’t, it’s time to stop being a sheep. Trust me you won’t be disappointed.

Southpaw Dan Meyer was once a highly touted pitching prospect. He looked like a can’t miss MLB pitcher when the Braves selected him in the 1st round of the 2002 draft. He quickly rose through the minor league ranks and made his major league debut in September of 2004. At 23 yrs old, Meyer only pitched in 2 games for the Braves that September. In those 2 games he gave up 2 hits, 1 Walk and 1 k and had an ERA of 0.00.

During the offseason the Braves acquired Ace Tim Hudson from the A’s in exchange for Meyer, Juan Cruz and Charles Thomas. So after just 2innings of work for the Braves the promising 23yr old Meyer was heading to Oakland.

Meyer was beat up in Oakland

Meyer never lived up to the expectations in Oakland. He was expected to contend for a spot in A’s rotation but he had a horrible spring in 2005 and was sent to the Minors. Meyer then continued to struggle as he remained in the Minors the entire ’05 & ’06 seasons.

In 2007 Meyer started showing signs of progress in minors. His 6-2 record and 3.40 ERA were good enough for him to earn a call-up to the bigs in August. Meyer made 6 appearances for the A’s, 3 of which were starts, but his performance was sub par to say the least. The once highly touted prospect struggled, pitchers hit .294 off him as he went 0-2 with a 8.82ERA.

In 2008, the southpaw once again underperformed for the A’s. He pitched only 27.66 innings during his 11 appearances in the big leagues. He also made 4 starts but it made no difference whether he started or came out of the pen big league hitters continued to crush the ball. Opposing batters hit .304 off of Meyer which led to a horrific 7.48 ER, 1.77WHIP & 0-4 record.

That was then, This is now

Last November, The A’s waived Meyer. The Florida Marlins decided to take a shot on him and claimed him off waivers. Going into the spring not much was expected out of Meyer. He had a shot at contending for the last bullpen spot and that was about it. Meyer then put together a solid spring and made the club.

Meyer has taken advantage of his second chance with the Marlins. In 13.1 innings this season opposing batters are batting just .152 and that has lead to just a 2.03ERA for Meyer. He’s still hasn’t recorded his 1st career win but he also hasn’t been beaten in this season. Plus with 5 holds already he’s proven to be a very reliable arm out of the Marlins bullpen.

Meyer's '09 pitching is worth smiling about

At 28yrs old Meyer appears to have finally found his place in the big leagues. There’s no reason that he shouldn’t continue having success for the Marlins. If you’re in a fantasy league that scores Holds then Meyer is definitely worth a look Deep or NL-Only leagues Meyer may be worth a look. He also is both SP&RP eligible so he can also be a valuable asset in leagues that have limited spots for relievers.

Surprises Atop the Standings

As of today, the Blue Jays, Mariners, Royals, White Sox, Marlins, Braves, Cardinals and Padres all leading or tied for the lead in their divisions………I’d be willing to wager a few pennies that the Jays, Mariners & Padres will all be out of the playoff race by the All-Star Break. The 5 unnamed teams all have a real shot at making the postseason.

Emiliiiiiiooooooooo!

Florida’s Emilio Bonifacio went 0-4 Sunday and is now only batting .500 for the season. He had a huge first week and fantasy baseball owners adding him like crazy. He’s got great speed and is in a great lineup but………by the end of the season over half the guys that picked him up early will end up dropping him. I’d be willing to wager a few pennies that Bonifacio’s batting average will not be over .270 when it’s all said and done. If you need steals he can help your fantasy team. Just don’t make the mistake of overvaluing his early success.

Paulus to the NFL?

Greg Paulus reportedly worked out with the Green Bay Packers. Paulus was a big time High School QB but chose Duke’s Cameron Indoor Stadium over some offers to play at big time college football programs such as Notre Dame. In all honesty, the kid has a much better shot at making it in the NFL than he does of making an NBA roster…..But that’s not saying much. Paulus was not a very PG at Duke. He was a decent athlete and great shooter but he made way too many poor decisions with the ball in his hand. If I was an NFL team I’d be willing to take a look at the kid but based on his decision making at the Point I’d be hesitant to give him a shot at making my team as a QB. Oh yeah………………..he has not played football since high school! Greg, go ahead and spend a few months enjoying football. Just when it’s all said and done don’t forget about the degree you earned from Duke. It may come in handy for you.

Spring Training is upon us and it’s almost Fantasy Baseball time. So why not test your Fantasy Baseball skills in The Pub’s Official League?

This one is ESPN hosted(Not a big ESPN fan but they have the best site). NL only. Max of 12 teams. Rotisserie Scoring, Basic 5X5 + OBP% & Holds. For a complete list of the settings go here.

If the league is competitive and active we have the option to go with keepers for next year. If not I’ll just start a new league next year.

It’s free so you’ve got nothing to lose and bragging rights to gain. If you’re interested just send us an email and I’ll send you an invite: sportpub@mail.com

Join today and invite your friends. The draft date is tentatively set for March 22.

Note to Dan: You better join. I sent you the invite already.
