As a Cards fan I often find myself browsing the latest posts on the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Cardinals forum. I’m not a member of the forums but for some reason I can’t resist clicking the latest posts link on the side of the sports page. Anyways here’s the inaugural winner of the most Ridiculous Trade for this week:

Cardinals Trade: Mitchell Boggs or Jason Motte + Chris Carpenter + Colby Rasmus

Mets Trade: Francisco Rodriguez

Credit to this idea goes to a poster named bdaniel1984 and you can read the entire thread here.

This guy wants to give up a decent reliever, a starter with an expiring contract and a young cost controlled everyday CF for a very expensive closer who’s talent’s are on the decline. Who in their right mind would give up 3 contributors, especially a highly regarded young centerfielder for an aging one innning guy?

What an IDIOT! I can’t help but laugh at the idiotic trade ideas I see people post in forums and blogs.

Congratulations bdaniel1984 on winning this prestigious honor.

I hate bashing a fellow Cards fans and as a whole I truly believe Cards fans are among the best fans in baseball. However I do not feel that online forums give an accurate representation of any team’s fan base.

Back in ’09 I gave that thing called twitter a try. Here’s a review of some of my live draft tweets.

Griffin is the right pick at #1 but he will never be a superstar. He’ll be good but not the type of player you can build a franchise around.

A year ago I felt like a genius. Now I feel like a moron. Blake Griffin is already one of the most popular players in the game. If he develops a jumper he will be a superstar for years to come.

I think its time for Vitale to retire.

Still waiting for that retirement announcement.

Almost feel sorry for Griffin the Clips are probably the most poorly managed team in all of sports.

Still true thanks to Mr. Sterling.

Thabeet has great upside. The only question is will the big man’s body hold up.

I meant to say the only question is will the big man every reach that potential?

I loved Harden in college but I’m not sure how he’ll translate to the NBA.

Mr. Harden is doing just fine in OKC.

Evans is an intriguing prospect. 5yrs down the road I think he’ll be one of the 5 best players from this draft.

Top 5? More like top 3.

Not sure about Rubio but it doesn’t hurt the Wolves to take him there. Gonna take him a few seasons to be an impact player.

Still waiting on Mr. Rubio. He’s also still take a few seasons away from being an impact player.

Rubio was probably a steal at 5. I didn’t think he’d last that long.

It’s still a littler early to judge. However I bet Minnesota would’ve tried trading this pick if they had to do it over again. Or draft Curry.

Flynn will start over Rubio. Not a bad selection but I’m surprised they didn’t go with Curry.

Flynn did start. And I’m still Surprised they didn’t take Curry with one of those picks.

I knew Don Nelson wouldn’t be able to pass on Curry. He’s a shooter with high IQ but he’s not much of a PG yet.

Ok. I’ll admit it. I didn’t foresee Curry putting up big numbers early on.

Jordan Hill is a skilled big man. Should be a solid contributor but probably won’t ever amount to anything more than a role player.

Spot on.

New York fans are too much. All the LeBron talk is an embarrassment. I don’t know how they can call themselves fans.

How’d that work out for you New York? You’re probably better off with a core of Amare and Melo anyways.

DeMar DeRozan has a ton of potential but don’t expect much out of him for at least 2 seasons.

Off by a year.

Brandon Jennings: Great Pick! Definite ROY candidate.

Spectacular Rookie Season. Solid but disappointing as a Soph. I still really like his upside.

Expect the number of Preps choosing Europe over College to increase drastically after Jennings has a big year.

Not so much. It’s too easy to go to school and not focus on academics for a year.

Terrance Williams is a solid player. Should have decent NBA career as a role player.

Up and down career so far.

Gerald Henderson isn’t your typical Dukie. I like this pick for the Bobcats. Should help them out immediately next season.

He had a decent 2nd year.

Hansbrough would fit in better on a good team but I think he’ll surprise the skeptics.

He opened a lot of eyes after his injury plagued rookie campaign.

Earl Clark is another solid player. Won’t be a star but could spend a lot of time in the league.

Depends on your definition of “long time”.

Not crazy about Daye. Obviously has a lot of potential don’t know if he’ll ever reach it.But I thought the same thing about Tayshaun Prince

Showed some improvement in during his 2nd season. Still a young developing player.

Vitale is a horrible analyst. Shoulda retired a long time ago.

Vitale rant #2.

James Johnson is an improvement over Noah

Decent player…but no not an improvement over Noah.

Jrue Holliday has a lot of upside but I think Lawson would have been the better pick

Holiday has looked pretty good so far. Lawson is older but I still think he is the better player. 5 years from now I may think differently.

Ty Lawson is a great pick but WTF? 3 PGs. T-Wolves are definitely workin on a trade.

Yes they were.

Lawson getting dealt to the Nuggets. Good pick up for the Nuggets if it happens.

Great pick up for Denver.

Don’t know about Teague. Very talented but he’s a 2 trapped in a PG’s body.

Big time performances in the playoffs. Still a man without a true position.

Well I’m out for the night. Will post a draft review tomorrow. Maynor is an excellent pick by Utah by the way.

And that was it. Apparently I was also too lazy(or possibly hungover) to post a review the next day.

World Cup

USA vs England: I decided to give Soccer a chance. However, it didn’t last long. I watched about 10 agonizing minutes of this match and I had to turn it. I just can’t see myself enjoying soccer on TV ever. Having said that, the atmosphere did look amazing. I wouldn’t mind attending the World Cup and watching one game in person.

Major League Lacrosse

Lacrosse is sort of similar to soccer. The only difference is that Lacrosse is played at a much faster pace with more contact and more scoring. Outside of PE class back in High School, I’ve never played Lacrosse but I’ve been getting more and more into this sport. Yesterday, Denver Outlaws at Boston Cannons was aired live on ESPN2. Boston came out on top 17-12. I’ll leave the complete recap of the game to the pros.I’m not quite a lacrosse buff yet and I can only name a handful of players of the top of my head but I really enjoyed watching this. I’ll take lacrosse over soccer any day. And I highly recommend that you try watching lacrosse if you already done so.

Pujols Hurting

The Cards got hammered last night by the D-Backs. The Cards were forced to go with the youngster Adam Ottavino. Ottavino has shown that he has the potential to be a big league starter but I don’t think he’s quite there yet. So the loss in its self is not a big surprise to me. The bigger story here is the health of Albert Pujols. People have been talking nearly all year about something just isn’t right with Pujols. He’s now batting only .296. I have some serious concerns about his health at this point. Last night he was wearing a compression sleeve on his bad elbow. Granted, a compression sleeve in itself doesn’t indicate pain since many other players wear them when healthy. However, Pujols hasn’t been one of those guys in the past. I don’t know for certain that he’s hurt. But I’ve been watching this guy his whole career and to me something just doesn’t look right. Elbow problems? Back problems? I’d lean towards the problem being the elbow but back issues could also be the culprit. All season Pujols has gone through stretches where he’s very bad and the short stretches were he’s on fire. This just isn’t the consistency we’re used to seeing out of him. And given the nature of back injuries, maybe the inconsistencies are being cause by a bad back. Again, I am no doctor and this is merely speculation on my part. After writing this Pujols will probably go 3-4 with 1HR and 5RBI tonight. But the question is will another unusually cold streak follow his next hot streak? If the answer is yes, then I believe that he must really be hurting.

Speaking of fake fans. I’m currently debating whether or not I should make an attempt to follow the upcoming World Cup. I’ve got a couple buddies that are soccer fans (though rare some are actually native to America) and they keep telling me, “Man, you’ve got to at least watch the World Cup.” On one hand it seems that I’D become what I despise most a “fake fan” and/or “bandwagon fan”. On the other hand it’s similar to the Olympics so I believe Olympic Rules do apply. {Olympic Rules: It’s ok to watch a sport you know nothing about as long as you are under the influence of national pride} I suppose bandwagonism will not apply in this case because even I know the US has not shot at winning this thing. Maybe just maybe, I’ll pay this sport known as “futbol” in the rest of the world some temporary attention. I’ll keep you updated on my status.

Breaking news!

I just received a text message informing me the Blackhawks won Lord Stanley’s Cup tonight. I really don’t care. It’s funny though because the person I received the text from has only been following hockey for maybe 2 weeks. He denies it but he is the definition of a bandwagon fan.

Why is there still hockey being played in June? Isn’t hockey a winter sport? Why don’t they crown their champion in the proper hockey environment? I’m talking sub-zero temperatures, on a frozen pond or lake and with no protective gear. And why is there no Canadian team in the championship series? It just doesn’t seem right if there isn’t at least one team from a city north of the border.

I don’t follow hockey at all. Don’t get me wrong I respect hockey and the athletes that play it but I have absolutely no desire to follow the sport closely. If it’s on at a bar I’ll watch it. If I’m offered a ticket to a Blues game I’ll go. But I don’t think I could even name 10 NHL players. If you love hockey, that’s cool. It’s just not for me. Just please don’t be one of those guys that suddenly acts like he loves hockey just because the team from his favorite city is kicking ass.

In the event that the Blues ever win the Cup, I promise I will not turn into a fake hockey fan.

for sports news then you probably should wake up and start getting your news elsewhere. ESPN has turned into the tmz of the sports world. ESPN is kind of like MTV. Once upon a time ESPN was a great sports network. However over time they’ve began transforming into a network that specializes in starting and spreading rumors.

My advice?
If you want quality MLB coverage….watch MLB network. If you don’t get MLB network then switch to a package or service that will give it to you. If you’re a true baseball fan then you won’t regret making the switch and getting to watch something other that the crap that spews out of people like Buster Olney’s mouth.

Quality NFL & NBA? Get NFL network or NBAtv.

Quality College Sports coverage? Well, TV wise you’ve go to stick with ESPN unless you happen to be a fan of a team that has their own tv network. With the exception of having to listen to the senile loudmouth Vitale I don’t have that big of an issue with the “mothership’s” coverage of college hoops.

Sports Radio?
First and foremost I’d say check you’re local AM sports stations. Otherwise check out ESPN defector Dan Patrick’s show. I’ve become a huge fan of the DP show and watch it anytime I get a chance.

ESPN used to be a great sports network. Now its nothing but a rumor mill. If you live outside the northeast or in a smaller market then you’ve probably switched to other sources for news. But in case you haven’t, it’s time to stop being a sheep. Trust me you won’t be disappointed.

Merriman is a proven steroid user. Why is there no public outcry to have him banned from football?

In the NFL, players caught juicing get suspended 4 games and return to action. Football fans continue to embrace the player and seem to forget overnight that he was caught breaking the rules. The NBA doesn’t even test for steroids. I have no doubt that there are past and present players in that league that have used an illegal performance enhancer at one point or another. Especially when they are re-habbing an injury. Basketball fans don’t seem to care much about the juice. So this begs the question……Why do people get so angry about steroids in baseball?

Some people are just plain idiots. However the main reason people get hot about steroids in baseball is the numbers. I understand that. Other sports do have important records. But no other sport perceives numbers to be sacred like baseball. So many people get pissed off when they find out many recent sluggers were possibly artificially enhancing their home run totals. If you’ve read any of my other posts then you would know that I believe most steroid bashers to be illogical hypocrites. But I’m not pro-PED. I wish the era of illegal substance use in baseball never happened. But no matter what we do it will always be there. Erasing history, tainted or not, just isn’t right. Nazis burn books and totalitarian regimes try to hide and manipulate history. I’d like to believe that here in the US we are better than that.

Altering the public's perception of history is what Nazis do.

So let’s keep all the records set by alleged juicers. No asterisks, erasing their totals from the record book or denying them the Hall of Fame. In the future we’ll tell their story and make sure that no one ever forgets that PEDs likely enhanced their numbers. You may be saying “but Barry Bonds doesn’t deserve to be the home-run king”. Yes he was an arrogant piece of trash that used illegal substances but he is the All-Time Home Run king. You can’t blame him for MLB’s lack of effort to eliminate PEDs from the game. You don’t like it tough. Maybe you should try embracing Josh Gibson as the all-time leader. Or better yet, embrace Sadaharu Oh’s 868 HR’s he hit in Japan. Maybe that will hold you over until Albert Pujols breaks the record or you decide to stop acting like a child about the HR list.

Don't want to embrace the US HR champ? No problem embrace Oh!

Moving along, if you’re pissed about the tainted HR totals then it’s time to start embracing other records. Chicks dig the long ball but there’s much more to baseball than HRs. For example look at the list below.

Single Season

Triples: Chief Wilson 36 in 1912

Batting Average: Nap Lajoie .426 in 1901

Wins: Jack Chesbro 41 in 1904

Hitting Streak: 56 Joe Dimaggio 1941

Doubles: Earl Webb 67 1931

Extra Base Hits: Babe Ruth 1921 119

Runs: Babe Ruth 177 1921

Total Bases: 457 Babe Ruth 1921

Career

Triples: Sam Crawford 309

Wins: Cy Young 511

ERA: 1.82 Ed Walsh

Doubles:792 Tris Speaker

AVG: .366 Ty Cobb

Wahoo Sam's Triple record is more impressive than the HR record

These are some absolutely insane numbers. Isn’t batting .426 for a season more impressive than 72 HRs? How about 36 triples in a season? If we as fans held these numbers to the same high regard as HRs then players would strive to break these records.
