Undefeated No More: Wednesday Night Recap

In case you haven’t heard yet, Seth Greenberg really had his Virgina Tech squad ready to go last night as they upset Wake Forest last night 78-71. So now officially no team will go undefeated this year. Nearly every year there is talk about a team that could go undefeated and it never happens. Bob Knight’s Hoosier squad of ’76 was last to accomplish this feat.05knight_slide1

And its going to be that way for a long time. In several ways today’s game is so much different than it used to be. Here’s a list of a few reasons I believe we won’t see another undefeated for a long time.
*There’s more parity
*There’s more early entries to the NBA
*Media is everywhere
*Teams play more games
Today’s game is just so different that I don’t think it’s realistic to believe that there will be another undefeated team for quite some time.

In other college basketball news.

Northwestern beat Michigan St. in East Lansing 70-53. Yes that’s right the Northwestern Wildcats ended the Spartans 28 game home court winning streak. But hey, don’t sleep on the Wildcats. They have a pretty decent team. This just might be the season that they finally make the NCAA tournament. I give it about a 5% chance as of now. That’s significantly higher than the 0% chance I give them every other season.

Speaking of streaks…UNC dominated Clemson 94-70 last night. Clemson is now 0-54 All time at Chapel Hill. When UNC is clicking they are without a doubt the best team in the country. I still think they are the favorites to win it all this year if Marcus Ginyard gets healthy enough to return to the team. It’s scary to think of how good this team could be if Tyler Zeller and Ginyard weren’t hurt. As for Clemson, They are a better team than those other Clemson teams that started the season undefeated. But they still are not quite playing at the level needed to be serious contender in the ACC.

#3 UConn survived a scare from #21 Villanova winning 89-83. I think its a pretty safe bet to say UConn will be in Detroit this year.

Blake Griffin continued adding to his resume for player of the year.He went for 27pts, 18reb and 3 rejections as #5 Oklahoma took care of business 72-61 vs Nebraska.

Kentucky beat Auburn 73-64. Jodie Meeks had another big game as he dropped 31 on the Tigers. This kid knows how to score. He shot 7-13 from the field including 5-8 from downtown. Not to mention he got the FT line 13 times, connecting on 12 of those attempts.
