Shot of Jack v2.26

Has it really almost been a week since Dan or I have made a decent post? I guess so. Time to change that with another Shot of Jack.

NCAABB: Injuries Shaking Things Up

Blake Griffin’s concussion has caused Oklahoma to drop 2 in a row. The Good news for the Sooners is, barring further injury, Griffin will be 100% in March.

Marquette however isn’t so lucky. PG and 4year starter, Dominic James suffered a season ending foot injury just 4minutes into the game. The Golden Eagles went on to lose 82-93 last night at home vs UConn. Marquette was a legit contender to make it to Detroit this year. Without James that now seems very unlikely. UConn’s win just also happened to be a milestone for Jim Calhoun.

Jim Calhoun wins 800

Calhoun makes how much? Just kidding. I’m not going to go there. If you have no idea what I’m talking about…here’s a link. Continue reading

Shot of Jack v2.20

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m still young. Or at least I consider myself young. Well I’ll put it this way. I haven’t hit the big Three-O yet. Having said that, I’m the type of guy that usually spends his Friday nights Continue reading

The Struggle in Champaign

I was half-way looking forward to watching the Penn St. @ Illinois game last night and was kind of upset when something came up and I had to miss it. When I got home, the first thing I did was get on the net and check the scores of all the games. At first glance, one final score caught my attention right away. 38-33. I thought to myself what’s a high school girls score doing here? Then looking closer I realized that  it was the actual score from the game I had planned on watching.

38-33 Penn State. Yes that is correct. A full 40 minutes of basketball were played and that was the final. Halfway decent junior high teams usually at least make it into the 40s and their games are only 26 minutes long. Long story short I’m glad I missed that one. I love good defense as much as the next guy but this game had to have just been ugly. Illinois and Penn State’s defenses aren’t that good. The victorious Nittany Lions shot just 28% from the field. The Illini were actually a little better shooting a whopping 30% from the field. I really don’t know why these teams attempted more than 10 3’s but they did. Penn St went 3-17 and Illinois went 3-16 from three point land. Taylor Battle led all scorers with 11 points.

I’m done with this game.

Dan and I have been slacking a bit but there really hasn’t been that much news. Its still A-Rod this A-Rod that. At least Spring Training is underway.

Tim Floyd: Do us a favor and…

I’ve gotta admit I’ve always regarded Tim Floyd as a top notch coach but after being ejected from USC’s loss at Arizona St., Tim Floyd makes the jackass Continue reading

Pub’s Mid-Season NBA Awards

Game wise the it’s a little past mid-season but for the sake of simplicity All-Star Weekend will always been when we hand these awards out.

MVP: LeBron James, Cavs & Kobe Bryant, Lakers: This is a tough one and since it’s only the mid-season MVP I’m naming co-MVPs. Both have very strong cases and it’s too close to call right now so I’m taking the easy way out. At the end of the year this won’t be the case.

Most Outstanding Player: Chris Paul, New Orleans Hornets: Paul is hands down the best PG in the NBA. He leads the league in assists (10.8ppg) and steals (2.7spg). Plus he’s averaging 21.3ppg. And more importantly he’s got the Hornets sitting in a playoff spot right now. (Note: As always  the pub MVP can’t also be named MOP)

Most Outstanding Defender: Dwight “Superman” Howard, Orlando Magic: Howard is an absolute beast down low on both ends of the floor. He leads the league in blocks (2.9bpg) and rebounds (14.1rpg). His play speaks for itself.

Rookie of the Year: Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls: OJ Mayo has been very impressive but I’ve got to give the nod to Rose here because he’s playing a much more difficult position. Rose has started all 53 games for the Bulls and has logged an average of 36.8minutes per game. Plus his numbers aren’t too shabby: 17ppg, 6.3apg, 3.6rpg.

Most Improved Player: David Lee, New York Knicks: The guy has improved his scoring by 6ppg to 16.4ppg, and his rebounds have improved nearly 3per game to 11.8. Yeah, I admit I’ve always been a David Lee fan so I’m a little biased but he’s definitely stepped it up this season.

UNC too Much for Duke

Duke had no answer for #5

Duke had no answer for #5

UNC pulled off the big win last night @ Duke. That’s now 4 in a row at Cameron. In the 2nd half, the Heels proved how scary they are when they play a little defense. How about Ty Lawson? He literally took over that game. Barring injury he’s played himself into a can’t miss lottery pick  for the ’09 NBA Draft.

Oswalt Speaks his mind

Houston’s ace, Roy Oswalt has gone public blasting A-Rod.

“A-Rod’s numbers shouldn’t count for anything,” Oswalt said in a phone interview with “I feel like he cheated me out of the game.”

He then went on to say this.

“The ones that have come out and admitted it, and are proven guilty, [their numbers] should not count. I’ve been cheated out of the game,” Oswalt continued. “This is my ninth year, and I’ve done nothing to enhance my performance, other than work my butt off to get guys out. These guys [who took PEDs] have all the talent in the world. All-Star talent. And they put times two on it.”

I applaud the guy for saying something like this but it’s a little late. Like he said this is his 9th year. It’s easy to say things like that now. And for all we know he could just be worried that maybe his name is on that list. Yep, thats the sad state of baseball. We have to question everyone’s motives. I have  99% confidence that Osawalt has always been clean. That’s saying alot. With the exception of possibly Greg Maddux you can only have up 99% confidence that anyone is and has always been clean.

Columbia South Carolina Loves the Spotlight

Why the hell else would they be trying to prosecute Michael Phelps for that photo? They’ve arrested a couple people already and it seems all the questions coming from investigators is about Phelps. There is no case here and it doesn’t matter how many witnesses come forward or they coherse into testifying against him. A photo means nothing. There are TV shows that show real people doing real drugs. There are photos of all kinds of famous people doing all kinds of drugs and counties don’t try to string together cases against these people. There is no way, in the court of law that any prosecutor will be able to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Phelps did anything illegal. Especially with the high priced lawyers he’ll bring to the circus. I do not condone marijuana use. But I absolutely hate seeing government agencies waste, time, money and resources on things like this.

Quick Baseball Recap

Slugger Adam Dunn has agreed to 2yr, $20million deal with the Nationals

Rick Ankiel and the Cards avoided arbitration by agreeing to a 1yr $2.35 deal

Dan Uggla was awarded $5.35 after going to arbitration with the Marlins

Last but not least, rumors are swirling that the Mariners have stepped up negotiations with Ken Griffey Jr. Personally I think it’d be great to see Jr. retire where he had the majority of his success.
