UNC’s Bench Gets Shorter

Roy Williams has announced that Sr. G/F Marcus Ginyard will seek a medical redshirt and not rejoin the team this year. Ginyard played in only three games this year after suffereing an ankle injury during the offseason. It was obvious that Ginyard nowhere near 100% during those games so this is probably the right choice. But I’ve said it time and time again, the Tarheels need Ginyard if they want to win the title.

As if things couldn’t get any  worse, Roy Williams suspended Soph. F Will Graves. As Roy said, he was dismissed for failing to “maintain the standards we expect of a Carolina basketball player.” Graves is a solid bench player and would’ve logged key minutes for the Heels.

They’ve already lost Tyler Zeller likely for the year. But now if he heals enough to return to action by the end of the year, you have to believe that the Heels may try to bring him back instead of seeking a redshirt. But in the end, I think it’ll be hard for Ole’ Roy to make Zeller lose a full year of eligibility for just a handful of games. Even if he could give them the necessary boost to reach Detroit. Because when a kid, especially a freshman misses that much time it’s hard to believe that he’ll be where he needs to physically and mentally to be a big contributor.

In positive Tarheel news, they won easily at home against Maryland last night 108-91. The game was actually more out of reach than the final score would indicate. Wayne Ellington scored 21 at the half and finished with a game high 34pts. The Heels shot 64% from 3pt land last night.

If UNC is knocking down the outside shot like that they will be near impossible to beat even with a shortbench.  But as we all know teams that live by the three die by the three. At this point and time I’ve got to say that UNC is no longer the favorites to win it all. They very well could pull it off. But its going to be tough. If they were still 11deep, they could survive an off night during the NCAA tourney. But now at only 8 deep, they’re going to have to put together 6 near perfect games to cut down the nets.

Who knows maybe this team will thrive at only 8deep. Because at times guys like Ellington and Green seem to struggle when they’re constantly rotated in and out like Roy likes to do. If one thing is for sure, it’s that Lawson, Ellington and Green are going to get the major minutes needed to prove whether or not they are legit NBA players.

One last thing, Hansbrough is a beast. I couldn’t write a 400+ word article about UNC without mentioning him.
