Shot of Jack v3.1

I’m making one of those rare weekend posts this evening. Just a brief take on what’s going on in the world of sports.

College Hoops Action

(9)Michigan State clinched the Big Ten title today with a 74-66 win at (20)Illinois this afternoon.

(15)Kansas manhandled (8)Missouri 90-65 today. KU was up 45-19 at the half and just never looked back. Mizzou is a very good team but they are not worthy of a top ten ranking. Especially after their performance today. And Kansas is looking very good again. They’ve won 14 of their last 15 and are now sitting pretty atop the standings atop the Big12. The defending champs are starting to look like serious final four contenders.

(6)Louisville won their fifth straight game today beating (10)Marquette 62-58. Rick Pitino’s Cardinals now stand just 1/2 game behind UConn for first in the Big East. If they win out they are guaranteed at least a share of the Big East title. They’ve got a home game vs Seton Hall Wednesday. Then they head to West Virginia to finish out the season on Saturday.

Former Ace Returns to the Mound

Chris Carpenter made his spring debut for the Cardinals yesterday. The former Cy Young winner pitched two scoreless innings against the Nationals. He was very efficient needing just 19pitches to get the 9 outs. I don’t put a lot of stock in spring training performances but this is very good news for the Cards. A healthy Chris Carpenter would be a huge boost to the team’s chances of winning the Central. On another note, if you can get Carp cheap in your fantasy baseball draft my advice would be to take a gamble on him. If he can be just half of his former self this season he’ll still be a top tier pitcher.

No MRI for Santana

The news that Johan Santana was leaving Florida and heading to New York for an MRI had to of made Mets fans nervous. Well it may not be so bad after all. After throwing a bullpen session this morning Santana felt fine and the MRI was cancelled. It looks like the Mets are going to take it slow with Santana. So it ‘s possible that he may not be ready for by opening day. With the Mets recent late season collapses it may be a good idea to just hold him out until after the All-Star break. I’m kidding of course but Santana is very important to that rotation. The Mets should do whatever it takes to make sure he’s healthy when August, September and maybe even October rolls around. Arm problems in pitchers usually don’t just go away so I really wouldn’t be surprised if Santana ends up pitching fewer games than Chris Carpenter this season.

Cassell traded to Chiefs

The Chiefs sent their 2nd round pick to the Patriots. In exchange the Pats sent Matt Cassell and Mike Vrabel to KC. This obviously show that the Pats are convinced the Brady will be 100% at the start of this season. For the Chiefs this a good move. They get a veteran leader in Vrabel and a potential starting QB in Cassell. But I really don’t think Cassell is that good. He played great for the Pats last season so everyone jumped on the bandwagon and immediately put Cassell in the top 10 or 15 QBs in the league. Thats a little premature for me. Cassell success seemed more like a product of the system. Don’t get wrong there’s worse QB’s in the league but I’m not sold on Cassell being a starter much longer in the NFL.

Cassell isn’t the only Overrated Patriot QB

Yeah I’m saying it. Tom Brady is the most overrated QB by far. He’s without a doubt top 5 in the league. But he too has greatly benefited from Belichek’s system. He has won 3 rings with the Pats you can’t deny him that. But what if Peyton Manning and Tom Brady switched places? I believe the Pats would have won 4 superbowls by now with Manning. Brady wouldn’t have any rings if he played for the Colts or any other team for that matter. So I definitely hate the fact that the media and some people say he’s possibly the greatest QB ever just because of the Superbowl victories. Trent Dilfer won a superbowl and Dan Marino didn’t. Does that mean that Dilfer was a better QB than Marino? Hell no! Brady is a great QB. I’m not denying that but he isn’t the god-like QB that the media portrays him as.
