Who’s Dancing: Northern Iowa: The Panthers withstood the 2nd half hot streak of ISU’s Osiris Eldridge to take the conference tourney 60-57 in OT.

Bubble Teams: Will the MVC get only 1 bid this year?

Creighton 26-7 (14-4), rpi 39: Creighton was blown out by Illinois St. in the semifinals. That glaring loss could stick out and cause the Blue Jays to play in the NIT instead of the NCAA.

Illinois St., 24-9 (11-7), rpi 45: The Redbirds started out 14-0 then went just 10-9 to finish out the year. Illinois St. has NCAA talent but being selected to the field of 65 looks very unlikely at this point.

MVP: Shy Ely, Sr., G/F, Evansville: 18.6ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.7apg, .8spg: The Purple Aces were not conference champs but if you take Ely away from that team they would’ve finished near the bottom of the conference.

Most Outstanding Defender: Bryan Mullins, Sr., G,SIU: 9.3ppg, 5.6apg, 2.2reb 2.0spg: The MVC is full of great defenders there’s a lot of players that are worthy of this award. The official MVC awards gave this to Mullins so we are just going to agree with them. Despite having his season cut short due a stress fracture, the kid deserves it. He has been one of the top on the ball defenders and floor generals in the conference for the past four seasons.

Most Outstanding Freshman: Kevin Dillard, Fr., G, SIU: 12.2ppg, 4.2apg, 2rpg, 1.3spg, .452 3pt%: Dillard’s highly touted teammate Anthony Booker was expected to be the top freshman this season but Dillard stole the show.

Pub All-MVC Team

  • G: Booker Woodfox, Sr., Creighton:  15.9ppg, 1.0apg, 2.4rpg, .7spg, .489 3pt%
  • G: Osiris Eldridge, Jr., Illinois St.:  13.9ppg, 6.1rpg, 2.4agp, 1.5spg:
  • G: Shy Ely, Sr., Evansville: 18.6ppg, 5.8rpg, 1.7apg, .8spg
  • F:  Theron Wilson, Sr., Bradley: 14.0ppg, 7.2rpg, 1.7 apg, 1.9spg
  • F: Adam Koch, Sr., N. Iowa: 12.3ppg, 5.2rpg, 1.8apg, .504FG%

Top Coach

Marty Simmons, Evansville: In Simmons first year last season the Purple Aces struggled finishing dead last in the conference and finished just 9-21 overall. In just one season Simmons has turned these cellar dwellers around. They improved to 5th in the conference and 17-13 overall. 17-13 is not amazing but it was by far the best season this team has had in over decade.
